Hart I. Seely of Waverly, publisher of the Watkins Glen Review, the Montour Falls Press, also a paper in Spenser and two in Waverly was killed instantly Friday afternoon when his car met in head-on collision with another. Riding with him and injured was his son, Hart. I., jr., who was engaged with his father in the publishing business. A past district governor of Rotary International Hart Seely was instrumental in the decision to establish the Penn Yan Rotary club. The accident happened near Alpine while he was driving towards his home from Watkins Glen.

Publisher of Five State Papers Dies

ALPINE AP – Publisher Hart I Seely, Sr., 64, owner of five Western New York weekly newspapers was killed last night in a head-on two-car collision near here.

His son, Hart I. Seely, Jr., 37, riding with his father, was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. His condition was reported serious.

Seely owned and published the Montour Press in Montour Falls, the Seeneer Needle in Spencer; the Watkins Review in Watkins Glen, and the Waverly Sun and the Valley News in his home town of Waverly.

He was the former president of the New York State Press Association, an organization of weekly newspaper publishers and once was vice-president of Rotary International.

The driver of the other car, Michael Watnch, 31, of Elmira Heights, was taken to Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira where he was treated for minor injuries.
