Mildred Seelye, schoolteacher

Mildred L. Seelye, a woman who touched the lives of school children for 43 years, died Friday.

She was 90.

Seelye, of Dimondale, retired from Lansing public schools in 1964, after four decades in the classroom.

She taught for 38 years in Lansing public schools. She was a fourth-grade teacher at Cavanaugh Elementary School when she retired.

“She was a very dedicated teacher,” said Dan Seelye, her nephew who lives in Albion. “That was probably one of her greatest attributes. She was a Christian lady and a very devout Methodist.”

On her 90th birthday in August, a group of teachers she used to work with and former students threw a birthday bash for her at a Lansing restaurant, he said. She was well thought of among former teachers.

She was a member of the faculties at Foster Avenue and Christiancy Elementary Schools during the 1940s and 1950s before transferring to Cavanaugh in 1959. Seelye began her teaching career in Wyandotte.

Seelye earned her teaching certificate from Western Michigan University, then received a degree from Michigan State University in 1942.

Graveside services are set for 1 p.m. Monday at River Ridge Cemetery in Belding. Arrangements are handled by Palmer-Bush Lansing Chapel.
