Herbert Seely
A memorial service for F. Herbert Seely, 76, of Chico, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
He died Monday, Jan. 30, 1995, at a local hospital.
Seeley (sic) was born Feb. 12, 1918, to Forrest and Nelia Seely in Denver, Colo.
For 22 consecutive years, he was Butte County Auditor/Controller. His campaign promise was to be “hard-nosed and cantankerous” in handling the county taxpayers’ money.
Voters elected him to four terms beginning in 1952. During his tenure he implemented the first computerized accounting system used by a county in California.
Memberships included the Rotary Club of Oroville and other civic organizations. Seely’s hobbies were wood working, charcoal sketching, sailing and riding his horse, named Buckshot.
Until recent health problems he attended both Butte College and Chico State University.
Survivors include three sons, Mike of Gridley, Terry of Loomis and Alan of Oroville; a daughter, Patricia Stone of Stockton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements.
