Leaves Large Estate Though Generous Always to Church and Charity.

C.R. SEELY, after a long and useful life, passed away Sunday at his home on Trimble road about 4 1-2 miles from this city. Mr. Seely was one of the oldest and best known citizens of Santa Clara county, and one whose departure will be remembered with regret by scores of relatives and friends, many of whom for many years have been closely connected with him socially and financially, and knew him to be a man of sterling qualities.

Born in 1830.
The deceased was born in New York State, December 29, 1830. At the age of 12 he moved west with his parents who settled in Jones county, Iowa, subsequently he chose for a life companion, Miss Salena Southern, whom he married September 1, 1849. In 1854 leaving his family (which consisted at that time of a wife and two sons), in the hands of friends, he sailed via the Isthmus of Panama for California. In 1857 he rejoined his family and together with one or two other families started on the long and dangerous journey across the plains with ox teams in the spring of 1859, being nearly half the year making the trip. The little company of 9 men were attacked by the Indians on Goose creek, where Mr. Seely, who was appointed and officiated as captain, displayed the coolness and courage which was characteristic of him.
