AWOL Soldier Hangs Self at Letterman

SAN FRANCISCO, Mar. 25. – (UP) – The army today investigated the death of Pvt. Eugene Seely, 21, Mt. Pleasant, Utah, whose body was found hanging from a pipe in an unused theatre at Letterman General hospital.

The patient had been listed as AWOL since he vanished from his ward March 14. He had been dead at least five days when discovered during a routine fire inspection yesterday.

Utah Soldier’s Body Is Found

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The body of a 21-year old Mt. Pleasant, Utah, army private was found hanging from a pipe in an unused theatre building at the Presidio here yesterday.

An army spokesman said the victim, Pvt. Eugene Seely, had been admitted to Letterman General hospital Jan. 14 for neuronpsychiatric observation. Seely had been missing from the hospital ward since March 14.

He had been inducted last spring and assigned to an ordnance outfit in Alaska.

Seely’s father is Benjamin F. Seely of Mt. Pleasant.

PVT Eugene Seely

MT. PLEASANT. Sanpete County – Pvt Eugene Seely, 22, who died in San Francisco Monday, was a son of Frank and Minnie Bell Christensen Seely.

He was graduated from North Sanpete High School and was a member of the South Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Assn.

He joined the Army May 18, 1951, and in November 1951, was sent to Anchorage, Alaska. He had been ill and in Lettermen General Hospital for several weeks.

Surviving are his father: his stepmother, Mrs. Merelda Seely; five brothers and sisters: Don Frank Seely, Burt Seely, Mrs. Wilma Coombs, Mrs. Katherine Guymon and Louise Seely, all of Salt Lake City; five stepbrothers and stepsisters: Levi Anderson, Ogden; Jay Anderson, Ogden: Mrs. Rae Christensen, Provo; Mrs. B. Wright, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Joanne Dryer, Salt Lake City.
