DEATH CLAIMS HIGHLAND MAN

HIGHLAND, July 28. – Highlanders are mourning the death of Edwin Harvey Seely, an outstanding member of the community who has maintained his residence here many years. Mr. Seely passed away this afternoon at St. Bernardine’s hospital, after a brief illness. His two daughters, Elaine Elizabeth and Barbara Lea, have as yet not been informed of his passing, since they are in Skagway, Alaska, on a summer tour.

Mr. Seely was 61 years of age, having been born on June 14, 1878, at Mt. Pleasant, Utah. As a lad, he came to Highland in 1883 with his father and mother, David Randolph Seely of Highland and the late Mary E. Seely. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Wadington on March 18, 1908, and his two talented daughters were born in Highland.

For 34 years Mr. Seely served as a rural mail carrier, with the remarkable record of never having missed a day from his position. A loyal member of Highland lodge, Knights of Pythias, and also a member of the Sisters of Pythias, he served the former organization as chancellor commander. As a young man, he was affiliated with the organizations of the Highland Congregation church, when it was located on Base Line.

A person of kindly demeanor and as one having the greatest affection for his family, his passing is deeply regretted. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Betty Seely; his daughters, Elaine Elizabeth, and Barbara Lea; his father, David Randolph Seely; a sister, Mrs. Florence Wells; two brothers, Victor Seely, and W.H. Seely, all of Highland. Funeral arrangements are pending, with Stephens & Bobbitt in charge.

Highland Pays Final Tribute to E.H. Seely

Knights, Pythian Sisters Attend Funeral of Widely-Known Resident in Body

HIGHLAND, Aug. 8. – Final tribute to Edwin Harvey Seely, well-known citizen of the valley, was paid by the entire community at funeral services held Tuesday afternoon at the Stephens & Bobbitt chapel in San Bernardino. The Rev. Harold V. Hartshorn of Pine Knot, former pastor of the Highland Congregational church, officiated.

Tribute to Mr. Seely was paid by the Rev. Mr. Hartshorn, as he told of a life devoted to good fellowship and kindly deeds. Born in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, in 1878, Mr. Seely came to this valley in 1883. In 1908 he married Miss Elizabeth Waddington and since then they have made their home here.

For 34 years Mr. Seely was the mail carrier on the rural route in Highland. He had long been an active member of Highland lodge No. 211, Knights of Pythias, of which he was a charter member and a past chancellor. A large group of Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters attended the services in a body.

Mrs. Ralph B. Graham, contralto sant “In the Garden” and “Goin’ Home.” She was accompanied by her son, William Graham.

The Rev. Mr. Hartshorn closed the services with the reading of two favorite poems of Mr. Seely.

Pallbearers, all old friends and business associates, were Chester Cole, Louis Johnson, William Nye, Walter Sewell, Roy Behrens and C.B. Mignot. Interment in Mountain View cemetery followed brief graveside services.

Mr. Seely is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bessie W. Seely, his two daughters, Elaine Elizabeth and Barbara Lee; his father David Randolph Seely, two brothers, William H. and Victor Seely, and a sister, Mrs. Florence E. Wells, all of Highland.
