SEELYE, Edwin B. – November 2, 1988, in Berkeley; Dr. Seelye was born in Worcester, MA, Feb. 22, 1907; attended Amherst and Yale; practiced medicine in Worcester; and in Oakland, Ca.; he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific and was an active advocate of world peace and world conservation; husband of Mary Clark Seelye; father of Anne Barrows and Alison Howard; grandfather of Keridwen and Esme Howard; great-grandfather of Melissa Jane Crehan; Dr. Seelye’s first wife, Joyce McGavran Seelye, died in England, 1978.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, 1988 at the Berkeley Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 1606 Bonita St. cor of Cedar, Berkeley at 3 p.m.

Dr. Edwin B. Seelye, 81, of Berkeley, Calif., formerly of Worcester, died Nov. 2 in Berkeley.

Dr. Seelye attended North High School and Deerfield Academy and received a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College in 1929. He received his medical degree from Yale University Medical School, New Haven, Conn., in 1933.

He served as an intern and resident before joining the surgical staff at Worcester Memorial Hospital and starting a private practice in Worcester.

During World War II, he served in the South Pacific as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, resuming his private practice after the war.

In the late 1950s, Dr. Seelye moved to Berkeley, establishing a private practice in Oakland, Calif.

Throughout his life, he was an advocate of conservation and world peace.

He leaves his wife, Mary (Clark) Seelye, who has been active as a teacher of children with learning disabilities; two daughters, Anne Burrows and Alison Howard, both of Berkeley; a brother, Laurens C. Seelye of Paxton; four grandchildren, Titus and Sasha Crehan, and Keridwen and Esme Howard; and a great granddaughter, Melissa Jane Crehan, all of Berkeley; and many nieces and nephews. His first wife Joyce McGavran, died from injuries received in an automobile accident in 1978, while she and Dr. Seelye were vacationing in England.

He was born in Worcester, a son of Dr. and Mrs. Walter C. Seelye.

A memorial service was held Nov. 19 at the Berkeley Unitarian Fellowship Hall.
