Boyd Ferguson Seeley

Birth: Mar. 5, 1835 - Death: Mar. 13, 1909
"Co. A 3rd Wis. Vol."

Boyd Ferguson Seeley was born on the 5 March 1835 in Eire Co., Pennsylvania, the forth child and third son of Obadiah Seeley (1794-1852) and Betsy Ferguson (1804-1854).

On the 22 February 1857, Boyd married Rebecca Allen (1837-1923) in Monroe Co., Wisconsin. Rebecca was born on the 7 May 1837 in Collins, Erie Co., New York, the daughter of Potter Allen (1808-1889) and Polly Bruce (1798-?). Boyd and Rebecca had eight children between 1855 and 1885: Esther, Bettie, Julius, Elfie, Guy, Irene, Ivy, and Maud.

During the Civil War, Boyd served in the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry. Although he enlisted on the 10 October 1861 at the rank of Private, he and the 3rd did not begin active duty until the 28 January 1862, when they were officially mustered in. Although it is difficult to know precisely what battles Boyd was actually involved in, the 3rd is reported to have fought in many battles in Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas. According to the 1890 Veterans Schedules, Boyd received a disability discharge on the 22 June 1865 due to the fact that he received permanent injuries from falling off a horse.

After his discharge, Boyd returned to his wife and children in Monroe Co., Wisconsin, and to his previous profession of farming. They remained there until moving to Dunn Co., Wisconsin between 1871 and 1874, where they were still living in 1880. Between 1880 and 1885, Boyd moved his family to Osborne Co., Kansas, where their last child was born. By 1890, Boyd, Rebecca, and their children had moved again, this time settling in Benton Co., Oregon. According to the 1900 U.S. Census, was employed as a day laborer and rented a home in Corvallis.

Boyd Seeley died on the 13 March 1909 in Corvallis, Benton Co., Oregon, and was buried at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Corvallis. Rebecca, his wife, remained in Benton County for a while before moving to Portland in order to be closer to some of her children that had moved there. She died on the 17 February 1923 in Portland.
