Golden Wedding Couple Recall First Years Of Marriage

WELLINGTON – Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Seeley of 516 Herrick Ave. West will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary quietly Friday.

Both born in 1884, the Seeleys remember their first winter of marriage when they set up housekeeping on Milan Street in Norwalk.

Mr. Seeley remembers he was working for 12 cents per hour and moved to Toledo to “get rich quick” when he was offered a job there at 18 cents per hour.

The Seeleys lived in Toledo for 15 years and during that time owned three homes. Their first was a small cottage which they were able to buy by scraping together $200 for a down payment. They had just $6 left with which to pay taxes.

When they moved to Wellington, they bought the West End Grocery and operated it for 13 years.

They are the parents of two children, Marian, now Mrs. Boyd McConnell, and Charles, both of Wellington. They have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
