Elopment Recalled On Golden Wedding Date

Sunday, February 14, is a red-letter day for the Seely families of this area for it marks the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Seely of 251 Brett street.

It was just 50 years ago that the local newspapers carried a news headline: “Popular Eureka Couple, Who were to Wed Here Tuesday, Will ‘elope’ to city Today,” and the sub-head added that they “planned to dodge attentions of their friends but will be given a big farewell nevertheless.”

Excerpts from the story follow-

“Leaving for San Francisco today on the steamer Kilburn will be Ned Seely, member of the Seely quartet, well known clubman and social favorite and Miss Jennie Redmond, a popular young Eureka girl, until recently engaged at the Sequoia hospital as a nurse.

“Returning from San Francisco with the next ten days will be Mr. and Mrs. Seely. Mr. Seely and Miss Redmond are to be married in the metropolis.”
